AS9100 risk-based thinking is the practice of considering risks and opportunities when planning, operating, and improving an aerospace quality management system. It refers to using risk awareness in process controls, decision-making, and improvement activities so that issues affecting product conformity, delivery, customer requirements, or process performance are identified and addressed in a proportionate way.
In manufacturing and aerospace operations, risk-based thinking commonly appears in areas such as production planning, supplier control, change management, inspection planning, nonconformance handling, and corrective action. It may be supported by tools such as risk registers, FMEA, process audits, control plans, or management review inputs, but it is broader than any single tool.
AS9100 risk-based thinking should not be confused with a requirement that every risk be managed through a formal enterprise risk program or a fully quantified risk model. In AS9100 usage, the emphasis is on embedding risk consideration into relevant quality and operational processes, with records and methods appropriate to the organization’s context and the significance of the risk.
