Operational KPIs are measurable indicators used to track how well manufacturing operations are performing against defined goals. They commonly refer to production, quality, delivery, equipment, and flow measures that help teams understand execution health on the shop floor and across connected systems.
In manufacturing environments, operational KPIs may include throughput, schedule adherence, overall equipment effectiveness, yield, scrap rate, rework, downtime, cycle time, work-in-process, and on-time completion. These measures are often calculated from data in MES, ERP, QMS, maintenance, inspection, or automation systems, then reviewed in dashboards, daily management routines, and continuous improvement activities.
A KPI is not just any available data point. It is a metric selected because it is important to operational control or decision-making. For example, machine status may be raw data, downtime may be a metric, and unplanned downtime against a target may be an operational KPI. Operational KPIs should also not be confused with purely financial KPIs, although the two may be connected through cost, capacity, and quality performance.
