AS9100 counterfeit parts prevention refers to the quality management system controls used to reduce the risk that counterfeit, suspect, or unauthorized parts enter aerospace products, assemblies, or maintenance work. In this context, a counterfeit part is commonly understood as a part or material that is misrepresented in origin, identity, condition, certification, or performance status.
In aerospace manufacturing and MRO, counterfeit parts prevention is typically addressed through purchasing controls, supplier evaluation, source approval, traceability, receiving inspection, certificate review, material identification, and segregation of suspect items. It may apply to electronic components, mechanical parts, raw material, fasteners, tooling-related items, or any purchased product where authenticity matters.
The term is often associated with AS9100 because the aerospace quality management standard includes requirements for planning and controlling counterfeit part prevention within the organization’s processes. This does not mean that AS9100 certification alone proves that no counterfeit parts can enter a supply chain. It means the organization is expected to define and operate appropriate controls as part of its quality system.
Counterfeit parts prevention should not be confused with general nonconformance management. A nonconforming part may be genuine but fail a requirement. A counterfeit or suspect part raises an additional authenticity, source, or representation concern and usually requires controlled identification, containment, and disposition.
