Operations responsibility is the assigned duty and accountability for running, controlling, and improving production or operational work. In manufacturing, it commonly refers to what the operations function owns in day-to-day execution, including schedule execution, labor coordination, material flow, equipment coordination, process adherence, issue escalation, and completion of required production records.
The term is often used when defining roles across operations, quality, engineering, maintenance, supply chain, and IT. For example, operations may be responsible for following approved work instructions and recording production data, while quality may be responsible for inspection disposition and engineering may be responsible for technical changes.
Operations responsibility should not be confused with system access rights or legal responsibility. It describes operational ownership and decision-making scope. In procedures, MES workflows, ERP processes, or RACI matrices, it helps clarify who performs work, who approves exceptions, and where handoffs occur between functions.
