An authorized distributor is a distributor that has been formally permitted by an original manufacturer, OEM, or rights holder to sell specified products, parts, or materials. In manufacturing procurement, the term commonly refers to a source that is part of the manufacturer’s recognized sales channel for those items.
Authorized distributors are often used where part authenticity, traceability, configuration control, and supply-chain documentation matter. For example, aerospace or electronics buyers may prefer authorized channels for components that require certificates, lot traceability, or controlled handling records.
An authorized distributor should not be confused with an approved supplier. An approved supplier is a supplier accepted within a buyer’s own quality or purchasing system. An authorized distributor is authorized by the product manufacturer or brand owner. A supplier can be one, both, or neither depending on the relationships and controls in place.
Use of an authorized distributor can support sourcing controls, but it does not by itself guarantee product conformity, eliminate counterfeit risk, or establish compliance. Verification, documentation review, and purchasing controls still depend on the organization’s requirements and the risk of the item being purchased.
