A back-to-birth record is a traceable record that connects a manufactured unit, lot, or serialized item to its origin and production history. In manufacturing, it commonly refers to the ability to reconstruct what materials, components, processes, inspections, configuration states, nonconformances, rework, and shipment events are associated with that item.
The exact starting point for “birth” depends on the product and industry. It may mean raw material receipt, component creation, first assembly, serialization, or another defined origin point. The record is usually assembled from data held in systems such as MES, ERP, PLM, QMS, inspection systems, and supplier records.
A back-to-birth record should not be confused with a serial number by itself. A serial number or lot number provides the identifier, but the back-to-birth record depends on the underlying linked records, data quality, change control, and integration between systems. It is closely related to product genealogy and traceability, but it refers more specifically to the retrievable history for a particular item or lot.
