defect hotspot

A defect hotspot is a product area, process step, workstation, machine, supplier lot, time period, or operating condition where defects occur more often than expected. In manufacturing quality analysis, the term commonly refers to a concentration of nonconformances that deserves further investigation.

Defect hotspots are often identified through inspection results, nonconformance records, MES data, SPC signals, audit findings, or warranty and field return data. They may appear in Pareto charts, heat maps, trend reports, or dashboards used to prioritize quality and process improvement work.

A defect hotspot is not the same as a confirmed root cause. It is a signal that points to where defects are clustered. Additional analysis is normally needed to determine whether the pattern is driven by equipment condition, operator method, material variation, design sensitivity, inspection criteria, or another factor.

For example, repeated dimensional rejects at one machining operation, recurring paint defects on a specific part surface, or a high number of assembly escapes on one shift could each be described as a defect hotspot if the concentration is meaningful compared with normal variation.
