Metrology is the science and practice of measurement. In manufacturing and regulated operations, it commonly refers to the methods, standards, instruments, and controls used to obtain reliable measurements of parts, materials, processes, and equipment.

The term includes more than taking a reading with a tool. It also covers how a measurement is defined, how accuracy and uncertainty are evaluated, how instruments are calibrated and maintained, and how measurement results are made consistent across people, machines, sites, and time.

Metrology applies anywhere measurement affects product quality, process control, release decisions, or traceability. Examples include dimensional inspection with calipers or CMMs, torque verification, temperature and pressure measurement, weighing, and test equipment used in production or quality laboratories.

What it includes

  • Measurement standards and reference methods

  • Selection and use of gauges, sensors, and test instruments

  • Calibration and verification activities

  • Measurement uncertainty, bias, repeatability, and reproducibility

  • Inspection data used in quality records, SPC, FAI, or release documentation

  • Environmental factors that affect measurement, such as temperature, vibration, or cleanliness

What it does not mean

Metrology is not the same as inspection alone. Inspection is the act of checking whether something meets a requirement, while metrology is the broader discipline that supports trustworthy measurement. It is also not limited to dimensional measurement. Electrical, thermal, force, mass, flow, and other measurement domains can all fall within metrology.

Operational meaning in manufacturing

In day-to-day operations, metrology shows up in gauge control programs, calibration systems, incoming and in-process inspection, first article activities, laboratory testing, and investigations into variation or measurement error. It is often connected to MES, QMS, ERP, or lab systems through instrument records, calibration status, inspection plans, and measurement results tied to part or batch history.

Common confusion

Metrology vs. calibration: calibration is one activity within metrology. It compares an instrument or system against a known reference to determine its performance.

Metrology vs. MSA: measurement system analysis evaluates how capable a measurement system is for a specific use case, such as repeatability and reproducibility. It is related to metrology, but narrower.

Metrology vs. CMM: a coordinate measuring machine is one type of metrology equipment, not the discipline itself.
