operator qualification

Operator qualification is the documented confirmation that an operator has the required training, skill, experience, or authorization to perform a defined task, operate specific equipment, or work on a controlled process. In manufacturing, it is usually tied to a role, operation, work center, product family, tool, inspection activity, or process revision.

Operator qualification commonly appears in training records, skills matrices, MES workflows, quality systems, and access control rules. It may include completed training, observed competency, practical assessment, supervisor approval, retraining dates, or limits on what the operator is allowed to perform.

It should not be confused with general operator training. Training is an activity; qualification is the recorded status or evidence that the operator is considered ready for a specific scope of work. Execution data, such as repeated errors on a step or frequent help requests, can help identify possible qualification or training gaps, but it is not proof of inadequate qualification by itself. Equipment condition, instruction quality, material issues, usability, and process changes may also explain the signal.
