Repair disposition is an authorized decision that a nonconforming part, assembly, or material may be repaired under defined conditions instead of being scrapped, reworked to full conformance, or accepted as-is.
In manufacturing quality workflows, a repair disposition commonly appears in a nonconformance, material review, or deviation process. It identifies the required repair action, applicable limits, approvals, records, and any verification needed before the item can move forward. The decision is usually documented in systems such as a QMS, MES, ERP, or NCR workflow so the repair remains traceable to the affected item and production record.
Repair disposition should not be confused with rework. Rework typically means restoring the item to meet the original specified requirements. Repair may restore usability or function through an approved method even when the item does not fully return to the original configuration or specification. It is also distinct from scrap, which removes the item from use, and from a concession or use-as-is decision, which accepts a nonconformance without repair.
