Serial genealogy is the traceable record of how a serialized item was built, processed, moved, inspected, and consumed across manufacturing or service operations. It links a unique serial number to its parent-child relationships, component serials, lots or batches, work orders, operations, locations, statuses, and quality events.
In industrial systems, serial genealogy is commonly used in MES, ERP, QMS, and traceability workflows to represent the as-built or as-maintained history of an individual unit. For example, an assembly serial number may be linked to the serial numbers of installed subassemblies, the material lots used during production, and the operations where those relationships were recorded.
Serial genealogy should not be confused with the serial number itself. The serial number is the identifier; the genealogy is the connected history and structure associated with that identifier. It is also more specific than lot genealogy, which tracks groups of material by lot or batch rather than individual serialized units.
