Skill certification is documented confirmation that a person has demonstrated the competence required to perform a defined task, operation, inspection, or role. In manufacturing, it commonly applies to operator tasks, quality checks, equipment use, special processes, and other work where capability must be controlled and traceable.
A skill certification is usually tied to specific criteria, such as observed performance, test results, supervised practice, or approval by an authorized trainer or supervisor. The record may be maintained in a training system, QMS, MES, or skills matrix so that work assignments can be matched to current qualifications.
Skill certification should not be confused with simple training attendance. Attendance shows that training occurred; certification indicates that competence was assessed against defined requirements. It also does not always mean an external license or third-party credential, although some industries or tasks may use those as part of the qualification evidence.
