Technical-data control is the governance of technical information so that approved, current, and authorized data is used in manufacturing, maintenance, inspection, and related operations. It commonly covers drawings, specifications, work instructions, repair instructions, inspection criteria, process parameters, software files, and other engineering or product-definition records.
In industrial systems, technical-data control includes how data is created, approved, revised, distributed, accessed, retained, and linked to execution records. It is often shared across PLM, ERP, MES, QMS, document-control systems, and supplier or customer portals. In aerospace and defense environments, it may also include handling rules for customer-controlled, export-controlled, or otherwise restricted technical information.
Technical-data control should not be reduced to file storage or cybersecurity alone. It includes document control, version governance, configuration context, role-based access, and evidence of which technical data was available or used at a given point in production or MRO work. It is closely related to traceability, but traceability records what happened, while technical-data control governs the information used to perform and verify the work.
