Execution-layer visibility is the ability to see current production status, events, and exceptions at the level where manufacturing work is performed and recorded. It commonly refers to visibility provided by MES, digital travelers, operator guidance systems, quality workflows, and other shop-floor execution applications.
In industrial operations, execution-layer visibility may include work-in-process status, operation completion, operator actions, material consumption, inspection results, equipment state, holds, rework, and timestamps. The purpose is to understand what is happening in production or maintenance execution, not only what was planned or summarized later.
This term is often distinguished from ERP visibility, which usually focuses on orders, inventory, costs, and planning, and from machine-control visibility, which focuses on equipment signals and automation states. Execution-layer visibility sits between those levels by connecting actual work activity, quality records, and production context.
It is commonly used in traceability, schedule adherence, nonconformance management, process monitoring, and digital thread discussions. It does not, by itself, imply full analytics maturity, automated control, or formal compliance status.
