Immediate containment in an NCR workflow is the short-term control put in place as soon as a nonconformance is identified to prevent known or suspected nonconforming product, material, tooling, data, or process output from moving forward. It is not final disposition, root cause analysis, or corrective action. Its purpose is to preserve control and traceability while quality, engineering, production, or MRB authorities determine what happens next.
In regulated manufacturing, immediate containment is usually expected to be documented, time-bound, and traceable. A verbal instruction to “hold that lot” may be operationally useful in the moment, but it is weak containment unless the affected scope, responsible person, location, status, and system controls are recorded in the NCR, QMS, MES, ERP, or other governing system.
What immediate containment commonly includes
- Physically segregating or tagging suspect material, parts, assemblies, tools, or records.
- Placing a quality hold in MES, ERP, inventory, warehouse, or shipping systems.
- Stopping or limiting use of an affected process, fixture, machine, program, work instruction, or inspection method when appropriate.
- Identifying the affected scope, such as lot, serial number range, work order, batch, operation, supplier shipment, or time window.
- Notifying the functions that could accidentally move, consume, ship, rework, or accept the affected item.
- Preserving evidence needed for disposition, MRB review, root cause analysis, or customer communication.
What it is not
Immediate containment does not decide whether the product can be used as-is, reworked, repaired, scrapped, returned to supplier, or submitted for concession. Those are disposition decisions and usually require defined authority, often through MRB or another approved quality process.
It also does not prove root cause or close the NCR. CAPA or RCCA may follow, but containment is the control used to prevent further escape or loss of evidence while the organization determines the proper response.
Why system integration matters
Containment often fails in brownfield environments because the physical hold and the digital hold do not match. A part may be tagged on the shop floor but still available for issue in ERP. A work order may be blocked in MES but inventory may still be shippable. Supplier material may be held in receiving while planning still treats it as available supply.
For that reason, effective containment depends on how well NCR, MES, ERP, PLM, QMS, warehouse, maintenance, and inspection systems are integrated and governed. In many plants, full system replacement is not realistic because of validation cost, qualification burden, downtime risk, integration complexity, traceability obligations, and long equipment lifecycles. Practical containment often requires controlled coexistence: clear procedures, reliable status synchronization, and manual checks where integration gaps remain.
Common failure modes
- Scope is too narrow: only the discovered part is held, while sister lots, upstream operations, tooling, or in-process material remain uncontrolled.
- Scope is too broad: large quantities of acceptable material are frozen without evidence, creating avoidable capacity and delivery risk.
- System holds are incomplete: MES, ERP, warehouse, shipping, and supplier portals do not reflect the same status.
- Ownership is unclear: operators, planners, inspectors, and supervisors assume someone else has applied the hold.
- Evidence is disturbed: parts are reworked, cleaned, moved, or retested before the condition is documented.
- Containment becomes permanent: temporary controls remain in place without disposition, escalation, or corrective action.
The practical test is simple: after containment, can the organization show what was controlled, why it was controlled, who authorized the action, where the affected items are, which systems reflect the hold, and what criteria will release or escalate the issue? If not, the containment may be operationally incomplete even if the NCR has been opened.
