Aerospace traceability is the ability to identify and link aircraft parts, materials, assemblies, processes, inspections, and records across their lifecycle. It connects what was made or maintained, which materials and components were used, which operations were performed, who performed or approved them, and which evidence supports those steps.
In aerospace manufacturing and MRO, traceability commonly applies to serial numbers, lot or batch numbers, material certifications, work orders, travelers, inspection results, nonconformance records, configuration status, and release or airworthiness documentation. It is often managed across MES, ERP, PLM, quality management, supplier portals, and maintenance systems.
Aerospace traceability is broader than simple shipment tracking or inventory location. It focuses on product and process history, including genealogy from raw material or purchased part through subassembly, final assembly, inspection, delivery, and sometimes in-service maintenance. It is closely related to the digital thread, but the digital thread is the broader connected data model; traceability is the ability to follow and verify specific relationships within that model.
Traceability records can support investigations, containment, configuration review, first article inspection, and audit preparation. The existence of traceability data does not by itself imply compliance, conformity, certification, or acceptance; those outcomes depend on the applicable requirements, records, controls, and review process.
