AS9100 vs ISO 9001

AS9100 vs ISO 9001 refers to the distinction between two quality management system standards: ISO 9001, a general quality management standard used across many industries, and AS9100, an aerospace-focused standard that builds on ISO 9001 with additional requirements for aviation, space, and defense supply chains.

ISO 9001 defines a broad framework for managing quality processes, customer requirements, documented information, nonconformities, corrective action, and continual improvement. AS9100 includes the ISO 9001 structure and adds aerospace-specific expectations commonly associated with product safety, risk management, configuration management, counterfeit part prevention, traceability, special requirements, critical items, and control of external providers.

In manufacturing operations, the difference matters for quality system design, supplier qualification, audit preparation, production records, and integration between systems such as ERP, MES, PLM, and QMS platforms. A manufacturer may use ISO 9001 as a general QMS baseline, while AS9100 is typically applied where aerospace customer, program, or supply chain requirements call for the additional controls.

AS9100 should not be treated as a separate alternative to ISO 9001 in the aerospace context; it is commonly understood as an aerospace extension that incorporates ISO 9001 requirements. It should also not be confused with AS9102, which addresses first article inspection reporting rather than the overall quality management system.
