A CNC machining center is a computer-controlled machine tool used to remove material from a workpiece with high precision. It commonly performs operations such as milling, drilling, boring, tapping, and contouring under program control.
In manufacturing, a machining center usually includes a spindle, workholding, multiple motion axes, an automatic tool changer, and a controlled enclosure. Common types include vertical machining centers, horizontal machining centers, and 5-axis machining centers. The term is most often associated with subtractive metalworking, but similar concepts can apply to other machinable materials.
A CNC machining center should not be confused with any CNC machine. For example, a CNC turning center is optimized for rotating workpieces on a lathe, while a machining center is generally associated with rotating cutting tools and prismatic or complex part features.
In MES, quality, and traceability contexts, a CNC machining center may be connected to collect data such as program number, cycle state, part count, alarms, tool information, offsets, and timestamps. That connection supports production visibility and recordkeeping, but the machine itself is still the execution asset, not the manufacturing execution system or quality system.
