Competency assessment is a structured evaluation of whether a person has the knowledge, skills, and practical ability needed to perform a defined role, operation, or task to an expected standard.
In manufacturing, competency assessments are commonly used for operator qualification, role-based training, special process authorization, inspection activities, maintenance tasks, and other work where task performance must be controlled. The assessment may include written checks, practical demonstrations, supervisor observation, review of prior experience, or sign-off against defined criteria.
A competency assessment is related to training documentation, but it is not the same thing as a training record. A training record shows that training occurred or was assigned, while a competency assessment provides evidence that the person was evaluated against required capabilities. It also differs from a work instruction, which explains how to perform the task at the point of use.
In digital work instruction, MES, quality, or learning systems, competency assessment results may be linked to roles, skills matrices, task permissions, revision-controlled procedures, or qualification records. The term does not by itself imply certification or formal approval unless those requirements are separately defined by the organization or applicable quality system.
