Master data governance

Master data governance is the set of roles, rules, and controls used to define, maintain, approve, and protect shared master data across business and manufacturing systems. It establishes who owns key data, how changes are reviewed, and how data quality and consistency are maintained.

In industrial operations, master data commonly includes items, parts, bills of material, routings, work centers, suppliers, customers, quality codes, units of measure, and approved manufacturing or inspection attributes. This data may be used across ERP, MES, PLM, QMS, maintenance, procurement, and reporting systems, so inconsistent definitions or uncontrolled changes can affect planning, execution, traceability, and records.

Master data governance is not only an IT activity. IT typically supports platforms, integrations, access controls, and data workflows, while business functions such as engineering, quality, operations, supply chain, and finance commonly define requirements and approve changes. It is closely related to master data management, but governance focuses on accountability, decision rights, standards, and change control rather than only the tools used to store or synchronize data.
