Skill Matrix

A skill matrix is a structured record that maps people, roles, or work centers to the skills, qualifications, training status, and authorization levels needed to perform specific manufacturing tasks. It is commonly used to show who is trained, who is qualified, and where skill gaps or coverage risks exist.

In industrial operations, a skill matrix may link operators, inspectors, technicians, or supervisors to processes, equipment, product families, work instructions, certifications, or special process requirements. It is often used for shift planning, cross-training, workforce continuity, audit preparation, and controlled assignment of work in MES, LMS, QMS, or HR systems.

A skill matrix should not be confused with an organization chart or a general employee profile. It focuses on task readiness and documented capability, not reporting structure. It may support training evidence and operational planning, but it does not by itself prove compliance, certification, or competence unless it is tied to controlled records and defined qualification criteria.
