An IIoT platform is a software platform used to connect industrial assets, collect machine and sensor data, and make that data usable for monitoring, analytics, and integration with other manufacturing systems. In manufacturing, it commonly sits between shop-floor equipment and business or execution systems, helping turn raw equipment signals into structured operational information.
IIoT platforms often connect to PLCs, sensors, SCADA systems, historians, gateways, and edge devices. They may provide device connectivity, data normalization, event processing, time-series storage, dashboards, alerts, APIs, and integration services. Common uses include condition monitoring, process monitoring, energy tracking, predictive maintenance inputs, and production visibility.
An IIoT platform should not be confused with an MES. An MES manages production execution, routing, work instructions, quality checks, labor reporting, and production records. An IIoT platform can supply equipment data to an MES, but machine data alone usually lacks the production context needed for genealogy, traceability, or controlled manufacturing records unless it is linked to orders, materials, operations, equipment states, and quality requirements.
The term is also distinct from SCADA and historians. SCADA is typically focused on supervisory control and real-time operations, while historians store time-series process data. An IIoT platform may integrate with both, but its broader role is usually data connectivity, contextualization, and interoperability across OT and IT environments.
