A master production schedule is a time-phased plan that states what finished products, assemblies, or configured items are planned for production, in what quantities, and by which dates. In manufacturing, it translates demand, customer commitments, inventory targets, and capacity assumptions into a controlled production plan.
The master production schedule is commonly maintained in an ERP, advanced planning system, or integrated planning process. It often drives material requirements planning, capacity checks, supplier signals, and downstream execution priorities in MES or shop floor scheduling systems.
It should not be confused with a detailed dispatch list or operation-level production schedule. The master production schedule sets the higher-level production commitment; detailed schedules sequence specific work orders, machines, labor, and operations. It is also distinct from a forecast, which is an input to planning, and from MRP, which uses the schedule to calculate material needs.
In regulated or quality-sensitive manufacturing, the master production schedule may serve as a baseline for measuring schedule adherence. Changes are often controlled through planning rules such as frozen periods, approved revisions, and documented reasons for schedule movement.
