Production order execution is the process of carrying out a released manufacturing order on the shop floor and recording what actually happened during production. It connects the planned order from ERP, MES, or a planning system to real operations such as material issue, labor reporting, machine use, inspections, completions, and exception handling.
In manufacturing systems, a production order commonly defines what item to make, in what quantity, using a specified bill of materials, routing, work center sequence, and target dates. Execution begins after the order is released and continues through operation completion, data collection, status updates, and final order closure. MES platforms often manage the detailed execution steps, while ERP systems typically maintain the business order, inventory, costing, and planning records.
Production order execution should not be confused with production planning or scheduling. Planning decides what should be made and when; execution controls and records the actual work performed. It is also different from purchase order execution, which relates to buying goods or services from suppliers.
Typical execution records may include:
- operation start, pause, completion, and hold events;
- material consumption, lot or serial traceability, and substitutions;
- operator, equipment, and work center activity;
- inspection results, defects, rework, scrap, and nonconformances;
- quantity completed, quantity rejected, and order status changes.
