NCR traceability is the ability to link a nonconformance report to the affected product, process step, inspection result, material, lot, serial number, disposition, and follow-up actions. In manufacturing, it provides a record path showing where a nonconformance was found, what it affected, how it was evaluated, and what actions were taken.
NCR traceability is commonly used in quality management systems, MES, ERP, and inspection workflows. It may connect shop floor data, work orders, travelers, inspection records, supplier records, concessions, rework instructions, scrap decisions, and corrective action records.
The term does not mean simply assigning an NCR number. Useful NCR traceability depends on maintained links between the NCR and the related production and quality records. It should also not be confused with root cause analysis or CAPA. Traceability shows the record relationships; root cause and corrective action address why the issue occurred and how recurrence may be addressed.
