AS9102 Form 1 is the part number accountability form for a First Article Inspection Report. It identifies what part the FAI applies to, what configuration and revision were inspected, who produced it, whether the FAI is full or partial, and what approvals or reviews are required. It is not the form used to record every dimension, note, material certification, or special process result.
Common information on Form 1
Across AS9102-based FAI packages, Form 1 commonly includes:
- Part number and part name.
- Serial number, when applicable.
- FAI report number or FAIR identifier.
- Part revision level.
- Drawing number and drawing revision level.
- Additional changes, such as unreleased engineering changes or authorized deviations, if applicable.
- Manufacturing process reference, such as router, traveler, work order, or planning reference.
- Organization name and supplier code.
- Purchase order number or customer order reference.
- Whether the FAI is for a detail part or an assembly.
- Whether the FAI is full or partial.
- For a partial FAI, the baseline part number and revision, and the reason for the partial FAI.
- Prepared, reviewed, and customer approval fields, when required by the form, customer, or internal procedure.
What does not belong on Form 1
Form 1 does not normally carry the detailed evidence for every product requirement. That evidence is split across the other AS9102 forms and supporting records.
Material, special process, and functional test accountability are normally handled on Form 2. Characteristic-by-characteristic inspection results, including ballooned drawing characteristics, are normally handled on Form 3.
Supporting evidence may include inspection reports, certificates of conformity, material test reports, special process certifications, test records, nonconformance dispositions, and approved engineering changes. Whether those are attached, referenced, or managed in a customer portal depends on the customer and the site’s procedure.
Important configuration controls
The most common failure on Form 1 is not a blank field. It is a configuration mismatch. The part number, drawing revision, part revision, PO requirements, planning revision, and actual inspection evidence must agree or be traceably explained.
In brownfield environments, that information may come from ERP, MES, PLM, QMS, supplier portals, spreadsheets, or legacy document control systems. If those systems are not aligned, Form 1 can look complete while still being wrong. The risk is highest when engineering changes, split lots, rework, alternate planning, or customer-specific requirements are involved.
Customer and procedure differences
AS9102 defines the structure and intent, but customer flow-downs and internal quality procedures often add rules for naming, signatures, portal submission, attachment requirements, and approval routing. Some customers require specific FAIR numbering, electronic submission, or additional evidence beyond the base form.
Using software can reduce transcription errors and improve traceability, but it does not remove the need to validate the source data, control revisions, and verify that the FAI package matches the actual manufactured article.
