Enterprise systems are organization-wide software platforms used to coordinate, standardize, and manage core business processes and shared data across multiple functions and sites. They typically provide a central data model and integrated applications that support areas such as finance, procurement, inventory, sales, planning, and human resources.
In the context of ISA-95 and manufacturing, enterprise systems usually correspond to Level 4 (business planning and logistics). A common example is an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, which exchanges information with manufacturing operations systems (Levels 0–3) such as Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), SCADA, and control systems.
Enterprise systems define how high-level business information (for example, orders, schedules, material master data, and performance results) is represented, stored, and exchanged within the organization and with connected plant systems.
