ERP MES data ownership is the defined responsibility for creating, maintaining, approving, and correcting data that is shared between an enterprise resource planning system and a manufacturing execution system. It establishes which system is authoritative for each data element and which business role is accountable for its accuracy and change control.
In manufacturing, ERP commonly owns business-level and planning data such as customers, purchase orders, item masters, costing, inventory balances, and production orders. MES commonly owns execution-level data such as operation status, operator activity, machine events, inspection results, genealogy, consumption, rework, and shop-floor traceability. Actual ownership can vary by site, system design, and integration model.
Data ownership should not be confused with technical interface ownership. An integration team may manage data flows, mappings, and APIs, but the accountable data owner is usually the function responsible for the meaning and correctness of the information. Clear ownership helps prevent duplicate records, conflicting updates, and unclear correction paths when ERP and MES exchange data.
