ERP MES system overlap refers to the areas where enterprise resource planning systems and manufacturing execution systems handle related data, workflows, or decisions. In manufacturing, this overlap most often appears at the boundary between business planning and shop-floor execution.
An ERP system commonly manages enterprise-level functions such as orders, inventory accounting, purchasing, costing, and material requirements planning. An MES commonly manages production execution functions such as dispatching work, recording operations, capturing labor and machine activity, tracking genealogy, and collecting quality or process data. Overlap occurs when both systems contain similar records or support adjacent steps, such as work order status, material consumption, lot traceability, labor reporting, or production quantities.
The term does not mean that ERP and MES are interchangeable. It usually describes an integration and governance issue: which system owns each data element, which system initiates a transaction, and how updates are synchronized. For example, an ERP may create and release a production order, while the MES controls execution details and returns completions, consumption, and quality results.
ERP MES system overlap is commonly discussed during MES implementation, ERP integration, ISA-95-style system modeling, master data governance, and digital thread design. Clear ownership helps reduce duplicate entry, conflicting records, and unclear responsibility between planning, operations, quality, and IT teams.
