HRIS stands for Human Resources Information System. It is a software system used to manage workforce master data such as employee identity, employment status, job role, department, supervisor, location, and organizational assignment.
In manufacturing and regulated operations, an HRIS often provides foundational worker data to connected systems such as IAM, LMS, QMS, MES, and ERP. That data may be used to support user provisioning, role assignment, training workflows, labor reporting, and authorization checks.
An HRIS should not be confused with the systems that enforce work authorization at the point of use. For example, an HRIS may confirm that a person is an active employee, while an LMS may hold training records, an IAM platform may control system access, and an MES may enforce whether the operator is allowed to perform a specific operation.
The terms HRIS, HRMS, and HCM are sometimes used interchangeably, but they can differ by vendor and scope. In this context, HRIS primarily refers to the system of record for core workforce information.
