U.S. Munitions List (USML) commonly refers to the list of defense articles, defense services, and related technical data controlled under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). In manufacturing contexts, it is used to determine whether a part, assembly, drawing, specification, process document, or other technical information is associated with an ITAR-controlled defense article.
The USML is organized by categories covering areas such as aircraft, military electronics, missiles, and other defense-related items. For aerospace and defense suppliers, USML jurisdiction can affect how technical data is stored, shared, accessed, transmitted, and included in records such as work instructions, inspection reports, supplier packages, or first article inspection documentation.
The USML should not be confused with a physical inventory of weapons or materials. It is also distinct from the Commerce Control List (CCL), which is associated with Export Administration Regulations (EAR) items. A document format, such as an AS9102 FAI form, does not by itself make information USML-controlled; the relevant part jurisdiction, program context, and technical content are what commonly drive that assessment.
