A safety-critical operation is a task, process step, or control action where failure, loss of control, or incorrect execution can create significant risk to people, equipment, the environment, or the product being made.

In manufacturing and industrial systems, the term commonly applies to operations involving hazardous motion, energy isolation, pressure, temperature, chemicals, lifting, confined access, machine safeguarding, or automated control sequences. It may also apply to software-controlled actions in MES, SCADA, PLC, or other OT systems when those actions affect equipment state or operator exposure.

A safety-critical operation is not the same as a quality-critical operation, although the two can overlap. A quality-critical operation primarily affects product conformity or traceability. A safety-critical operation primarily concerns the potential consequences of an unsafe condition or control failure.

These operations are often subject to defined procedures, access controls, alarms, interlocks, training requirements, verification steps, and change control. The specific controls depend on the process, equipment, and site requirements.
