Brownfield implementation is the deployment of a new or upgraded system, process, or technology within an environment that already has existing equipment, data, workflows, integrations, and operating constraints.
In manufacturing and industrial systems, the term commonly applies to MES, ERP, PLM, QMS, automation, or data integration projects carried out in an active facility or established production network. A brownfield implementation often involves connecting to legacy systems, mapping existing data, preserving operational continuity, and adapting rollout plans to current production, quality, and traceability practices.
Brownfield implementation is commonly contrasted with greenfield implementation, which starts from a largely new facility, system landscape, or process design. Brownfield does not necessarily mean the existing environment is outdated. It means the implementation must account for what is already in place.
