Digital FAI is the use of software-based workflows and records to plan, perform, review, and manage First Article Inspection. In manufacturing, especially aerospace and other regulated supply chains, it commonly refers to creating and controlling the FAI package electronically rather than relying on disconnected spreadsheets, paper forms, or static scanned documents.

A digital FAI process may include ballooned drawing characteristics, inspection requirements, measured results, nonconformance references, approvals, revision history, and links to supporting records such as material or process evidence. It is often associated with AS9102 because that standard defines common expectations for aerospace first article inspection documentation, but the digital system itself does not automatically establish compliance or approval.

Digital FAI should not be confused with simply storing a PDF copy of an FAI report. The operational meaning is broader: it includes structured data, workflow control, traceability, version management, and integration with systems such as MES, QMS, ERP, PLM, or supplier portals. It also does not replace engineering authority, customer requirements, or quality review; it provides a controlled way to execute and maintain the FAI record.
