The ISA-95 model is a reference model for defining how enterprise business systems and manufacturing operations systems exchange information. In industrial environments, it is commonly used to clarify the boundary between systems such as ERP, MES, quality, maintenance, warehouse, SCADA, and control systems.
ISA-95 is associated with the ANSI/ISA-95 standard and the related IEC 62264 standard. It describes functional levels, activity models, and information models for areas such as production, quality, maintenance, and inventory operations. A common use is to structure data flows between business planning at the enterprise level and execution activities on the shop floor.
The model is not a software product, implementation method, or proof of compliance. It provides a common vocabulary and structure that manufacturers, system integrators, and software teams can use when mapping responsibilities, integration points, and data objects across ERP, MES, and OT systems.
ISA-95 is sometimes confused with the Purdue Model because both use layered views of industrial systems. In general, ISA-95 focuses on enterprise-control integration and operational information models, while the Purdue Model is often used to describe industrial network and control architecture layers.
