Material master data is the controlled core information that defines a material, part, component, or item used by manufacturing and business systems. It provides the common reference record for how that item is identified, planned, purchased, stored, produced, inspected, and consumed.
In industrial operations, material master data is commonly maintained in ERP, MES, PLM, QMS, warehouse, and procurement systems. It may include item number, description, unit of measure, material type, revision or status, approved specifications, grade, form, treatment, procurement type, planning parameters, inspection requirements, storage conditions, and traceability attributes. The exact fields vary by system and industry.
Material master data should not be confused with a bill of materials, inventory balance, lot record, or purchase order. The material master defines the item itself. A bill of materials defines how items are structured in a product. Inventory and lot records describe specific quantities or batches. Purchase orders and production orders describe transactions that use the material master record.
In quality-sensitive manufacturing, changes to material master data can affect downstream planning, inspection, traceability, and first article or change-control workflows. For example, changing a material specification, grade, form, or required treatment may have different operational significance than receiving a new lot of the same approved material.
