Production control metrics

Production control metrics are measures used to monitor how well production is planned, released, executed, and adjusted on the shop floor. They commonly track whether work is moving through manufacturing as intended, whether schedules are being met, and where constraints or delays are affecting output.

In manufacturing systems, these metrics are often drawn from MES, ERP, APS, quality, and shop floor data. Examples include schedule adherence, throughput, work in process, cycle time, queue time, dispatch compliance, labor or equipment utilization, and on-time completion. In regulated or quality-sensitive environments, they may also be viewed alongside traceability, nonconformance, and rework signals to understand execution risk.

Production control metrics are not the same as broad financial KPIs, although they can influence cost and delivery performance. They are also narrower than quality metrics when focused on flow, scheduling, and execution control. Their main purpose is to show the current state of production control so planners, supervisors, and operations teams can make factual adjustments to priorities, capacity, and work release.
