Production reporting is the capture, summary, and communication of actual production activity and results. In manufacturing, it commonly refers to reporting what happened on the shop floor, such as quantities produced, scrap, rework, downtime, labor usage, material consumption, operation completions, and work order status.
Production reporting is used in MES, ERP, quality, and shop floor management workflows to compare planned activity with actual execution. Reported data may be entered manually by operators, collected automatically from equipment, or derived from transactions such as barcode scans, inspection results, or work order completions.
The term should not be confused with production planning or scheduling, which define intended work before execution. Production reporting records or summarizes execution after or during the work. It also differs from broader analytics, which may use production reports as input for trends, performance metrics, and improvement analysis.
