System ownership is the assigned accountability for how a software, automation, or business system is governed, maintained, changed, and used over its lifecycle. In manufacturing environments, it commonly applies to systems such as MES, ERP, PLM, QMS, SCADA, historians, inspection platforms, and integration services.
A system owner is typically responsible for decisions about system use, access, configuration, change control, support coordination, data stewardship, and lifecycle planning. The role may sit in operations, quality, engineering, IT, or OT depending on the system and its business impact.
System ownership should not be confused with vendor ownership or technical administration. A vendor may supply or host a system, and an administrator may manage accounts or settings, but the system owner is accountable for fit-for-use decisions and governance within the organization. It is also distinct from process ownership, although the two roles often work closely together when a system supports a regulated or quality-sensitive workflow.
