A FAIR is a First Article Inspection Report. It is the documented evidence package showing that a representative first production article was inspected against the applicable drawing, specifications, bill of materials, process requirements, and purchase order flowdowns. In aerospace and other regulated manufacturing environments, a FAIR is often prepared using the AS9102 structure, but the required content and acceptance criteria still depend on the customer, program, part configuration, and contractual requirements.
A FAIR is not the same thing as general in-process inspection. It is usually tied to a first production run, a new part number, a design change, a manufacturing process change, a supplier change, a lapse in production, or another trigger defined by customer or quality procedures.
What a FAIR usually contains
A typical FAIR includes structured forms and supporting evidence that link the manufactured part back to the approved technical baseline. In AS9102-based aerospace work, this commonly includes:
- Part number, revision, drawing, and configuration identification
- Bill of materials and special process references
- Characteristic accountability, often from a ballooned drawing
- Measured results for dimensional and specification requirements
- Material and process certifications where required
- Nonconformance references if any requirements were not met
- Approvals, signatures, dates, and traceable records
The important point is traceability. A FAIR should make it possible to see what requirement was inspected, what result was recorded, what evidence supports it, and which configuration of the part and process was used.
What a FAIR does not prove
A completed FAIR does not guarantee that all future production will be conforming. It also does not guarantee customer acceptance, audit success, or regulatory compliance. It is evidence that a defined article, produced under defined conditions, was inspected and documented against defined requirements.
Recurring production still depends on process control, operator training, tooling condition, supplier performance, inspection discipline, change control, and the quality system. A clean FAIR can coexist with later production problems if the process is not stable or if changes are not controlled.
Where systems matter
In brownfield operations, FAIR data often touches several systems: PLM for design revisions, ERP for part and purchase order data, MES for routing and production execution, QMS for nonconformance and approvals, and document control systems for specifications and certificates. The FAIR is only as reliable as the configuration control and data handoffs behind it.
Many plants still manage parts of the FAIR process with spreadsheets, PDFs, scanned certificates, or customer portals. Full replacement of legacy systems is often unrealistic in aerospace-grade environments because of validation cost, qualification burden, downtime risk, integration complexity, traceability obligations, and long equipment lifecycles. More practical improvements usually focus on controlled data exchange, revision discipline, audit trails, and reducing manual transcription where the risk is highest.
Common failure modes
- Using the wrong drawing revision or specification revision
- Missing characteristics during ballooning or characteristic extraction
- Copying results manually without adequate review or traceability
- Submitting incomplete material, process, or special process evidence
- Failing to link nonconformances, deviations, or customer approvals
- Repeating a previous FAIR after a change that should have triggered a new or delta FAIR
For that reason, FAIR preparation is not just a quality paperwork task. It depends on engineering release discipline, purchasing flowdown, production execution, inspection capability, supplier documentation, and controlled approval workflows.
